STOKES VALLEY

Visitors were welcomed from sister institutes; including Mrs.- Boyes and Mrs. Ross, from the South Wellington Federation. Another new member was nominated, ---and-—bankbooks were issued to two babies, belonging to Mesdames Robinson and Richardson.

Several members took the opportunity of hearing the overseas delegate, Miss Andrews, speak about her trip to Honolulu, at the group meeting held at Upper Hutt last week. Miss Andrews spoke of experiences with delegates from foreign countries, and gave an outline of the wonderful time she spent while on duty bound.

"A demonstration of-the^making-of-gloves was-given-by Mrs; Ross, and a very interesting talk on their sewing. Members appreciated being shown the road to .economy.

A cooking competition was started, the winner of the most points to receive a suitable trophy at the end of the financial year.

A competition was held during the afternoon for the best thrift .-irticle made from one flour bag. The judges, Mrs. Ross and Mrs. Boyes, highly commended every entrant, special mention being made of a costume made by Mrs. Coby out of two flour bags. The winners of the competitions were as follows:—Mrs. Morris (travelling companion), 1; Mrs. Bish (bathroom splash), 2; Miss J. August (apron), 3. A trophy; donated by Miss, McGregor was won by Mrs. Morris. A handpainted cushion was also donated by a member, the proceeds to go to the institute funds.

Mrs. Rait delighted all present with her singing of a number of songs.

An', effort was made to lorm a garden circle early in the spring. It was decided to ask a sister institute to cooperate in having a court and showing works of art at the show to be held in July.

Special singing was arranged in honour of the Jubilee of the King and Queen.

Beautiful shoulder sprays made by Mrs. Williamson were presented to Mesdames Boyes, Ross, and Rait.

An interesting talk was given by Mrs. Hawthorne on remits for Auckland. A dainty afternoon tea was served.
