REPORTS AND RETURNS

Talisman Dubbo, Karangahake, reports:—Dubbo level: Ore broken out in this level gave good assay value for average width of lain. This ore came from stope at 210 ft north and from stope at 400 ft north. These stopes are 50ft and 60ft above level. Talisman No 1 level: The stopes 14ft below the Dubbo level, from 230 ft south to 260 ft south, averaged good value for a width' of 28in. At 275 ft the lode is 42in widevery good value. Drive south: In the drive to the south the work of advancing through the old stope was resumed at 473 ft. From 473 ft to 493 ft the ground was secured and retimbered The old stope ends at 493 ft and the drive is open from this point to 602 ft south. Mclntyre's drive (or Talisman No. 2 level): Drive south advanced 17ft, total 167 ft, on eastern side of stopes worked out by previous companies. Drive is passing through firm country, and should not require timbering. UNIVERSAL GOLD. Universal Gold Development N.L., Melbourne, has received a cable message from its engineer in New Zealand stating that he has secured an option over 2,000,000 tons of tailings dumps at Auckland. He estimates the value of the dumps at 30 grains of gold a ton. Reports, estimates, plans, and samples have been dispatched to the company. The engineer is going to Wellington to interview the Minister of Mines, with a view .tp securing a remission of the gold tax on the gold won by treatment of the tailings. GOLDEN SANDS. The secretary of Golden Sands, Ltd., reports that advice has been received from the mine manager to the effect that the water is being turned on today (May 29), and that for the beginning work will be proceeded with by day shift only during the next week, to enable the ground to be opened up. DAWN OF HOPE. Dawn of hope, Thames, reports:— The crosscut off the main drive, to intersect the hangingwall reef, has been advanced 4ft in a favourable class of country. The wing on the footwall reef is down 12ft. The reef is lft wide and is fair grade ore, which is very heavily mineralised. MAORI GULLY. The annual meeting of shareholders of the Maori Gully (Kokiri) Gold Dredging Company was held on Monday. Mr. J. M. Bunt presided, and emphasised the sound financial position of the company, with £2540 in the bank.: Commitments were small, and the estimate for the dredge and incidental expenses of £14,500 had been exceededby £40 only. The election of directors resulted in the retiring directors, Messrs. W. Hill and H. A Martin, .being re-elected. The chairman reported that the dredge had now been taken over by the company from the contractor and had begun work again at .midnight on Sunday. At a subsequent meeting of directors Mr Bunt was. re-elected chairman. ■-; QUARTZ MOUNTAIN. :_The manager of Quartz Mountain (Papua), Ltd., at Misima, under a report dated April 26, advises that, in spite of very unfavourable weather conditions, definite progress has'been made.'. The 200-ton hopper on the -machinery site had been finished, and the top hopper—to contain 150 tons—was then nearly completed. In this work the construction was designed for safety and permanency. The concrete foundations for the Jaques roll mill had. been put in, and were then ready for the mill to be put in position. The foundations for the^ drum crusher and the Hadfield jaw crusher were also in and by the end of last month the concrete foundations for the large tube mill would be commenced. The completion of this work would mean that most of the-machinery would be in position unless the work was further hampered by wet weather. AH the necessary; timber was. in position for

the aerial, which was then under 'construction. ' At the mine ah intermediate tunnel had been commenced 84ft above the', main tunnel, and good .progress was being made in both. The main tunnel was then passing - through a small blue pug. lode .carrying fair values, and;at some point further on this would undoubtedly join the main lode, and at that junction an enrichment could be expected. The appearance of this small lode was a.pleasing feature, as it was an indication of the proximity of the main lode. The inspector of. mines from Port Moresby had made an official inspection of the mine and machinery and found everything to his satisfaction. In conclusion, the manager reported that every effort was being made to "overcome the effects of ,the adverse weather conditions and to hasten construction. Results were then showing, and pointed to a successful completion of the general erection of the plant. NEVIS DIESEL. The secretary of the Nevis Diesel Electric Dredging Company, Ltd., advises that Investigations. Ltd.'s, boring crew has left- the claim owing, to approach of winter, which is so severe in the Nevis as to prevent any work being carried, out. Time did not permit sinking twenty holes in accordance with the agreement, only fifteen having been completed. The results of the first seven bores have already been published; the remaining eight are as follows:—Bore No. 8, approximately 35 chains south of the dredge, depth 62ft value 1.05 d per cubic yard; bore No. 9 east of No. 8, depth 59ft, value ".53d per cubic yard; bore No. 10, 30 chains south of the dredge, close to the western boundary,, depth 69ft, value .90dbore No. 11, two chains south of dredge near western- boundary, ; depth 52ft, value. .24df bore No. 12, two chains north of No. li; depth'B7ft, value .39d; ,pore No. 13, one chain and a half east w N,°; !?• dePth ? 3ft > value -17d; bore No. 14, three chains south-west of No •13, .depth..Bßift,' value 3.66 d per cubic yard; bore No. 15, 55 chains north of dredge at the' south end of Bailey's Hill, depth 71ft, value 4.23 d.
