Captain Vernon Wilson, of South Kensington, is a retired Army Officer, Recently he became a footman for a night. A woman friend complained that she had no footman to attend her when she went to Court at Buckingham Palace. So Captain Wilson volunteered. He hired a livery and carried out his duties. Then, with some fellow-footmen and chauffeurs he went for a drink. His new friends began to talk. One of them was very pleased with himself. He had been overworked during spring-cleaning, he complained, but now he was going to get his own back. "My boss is going away on holiday," he said, "and I've recommended a complete overhaul of his car. That'll cost £30. And the garage is giving me a 15 per. cent, commission." He named his employer, who is a friend of Captain Wilson's, and a few days later found himself seeking a new posi- ; tion.
