EARLY TRAINING
. As interclub' racing -commences earlier than usual this season,- it is essential that clubs a regular training , without delay. It is not wise to set downward and fast'rttles.as-to'Jiow much'training an individual should do, as a'great deal ,:depehas;.;bri the nature: of work at^whichxheV is employed. Almost all liujjCiorities oh distance running agree tKat walking is the most important exercise;, and. should be indulged in at all times of the- day. Training shoiild be taken gradually, and par|ipuTar attention should be paid to %le \fluringi ■ .the. .first ■ month or so. The,searjy stages-canybest-be.-used to •ibuilgftyfr.-sfcamina, ■. commencing with comparatively -short' runs, and .'increasing #&sstence gradua^ye,wjth>a; fair amount- of hill, wowt /'^eekHends-may be> devoted to ' walkingl^ excursions, whlch;4should : -not develop into walka short run of abou^2^,jjfards or so helps to avoid stiffnessiifduring the journey. • Toung runners should, .if possible, train with ni'ore experienced runners and pay particular' attention to style. For instance, - holding the arms too high is wasting energy and causes the upper portion of the body to tire quickly^ The ato'should ?be ; to iise as little;- energy as possible while ■ running, sp as to cover^a greatjdistance without tiring. When it is possible to run a full distance of about five miles without feeling unduly distressed, the speed can be gradually increased but not at the sacrifice of style.
