WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION

Another successful year is recorded in the twenty-seventh annual report and balance-sheet of the New Zealand Women's Hockey Association to be presented at the annual meeting on Tuesday. ,: ■■" • .■'••' '•'.■.. •■ The year's work, states the report, was notable '.through the inauguration of the examination of referees by the association.■■■'..lt; was■ decided to issue certificates on' the following basis: A grade special, ;90 per cent. . pass;. A grade, 85 per '.cent., and ,B grade 60 per cent. On September 19 the theory examination -was held, and : the following ■ were successful in obtaining passes:—Misses, Yeoman and A. J. Thompson, Mrs. ; Mudge, .Messrs. J. Hocking, R. H: -Thompson, and W. Da vies. From nominations received from associations th"c following'practical examiners-were appointed and awarded A grade certificates: Messrs. Bellamy, Cowley, Cusack, George, Hamilton, Martyn, and Scott. Several candidates were examined ■ for their practical test at the.annual tournament. " ■ I The invitation of the all-Australian Women's Hockey Association for a team from New. Zealand to participate in the Australian tournament to be held at Melbourne has been accepted and the initial steps regarding the tour are well under way. Three selectors, Messrs. Hamilton and Cusack and Mrs. Poulter, were appointed before the annual tournament, which they attended. Nominations from Auckland, Poverty Bay, and Manawatu have yet to be seen, and it is hoped that the team will be announced not later than June 1. A full itinerary has hot yet been received from Australia, but, at present, the arrangement provides that, if Suva attends the tournament, the games in Melbourne will commence on July 20 and conclude on August 3. If Suva is unable to accept, then the tournament will commence on Jujy 23. Brisbane and Sydney also want the team for matches, and it is anticipated that the tour will last from five to six weeks. In connection with the financing of the tour, circulars have already been forwarded.. There is still a considerable amount of work to be accomplished in/arranging'-the - tour and it is hoped that by the date of the annual meeting details will-be available to give to the associations. The association Js, at present awaiting a further letter from the Australian Association.

Roe, secretary of the Professional Golfers' Association, has been appointed manager of the British' Ryder Cup team to meet America on the course of: the Ridgewood Country Club, New Jersey, on* September 28 and 29. A world's professional high acrobatic diving championship is being organised for the coming season in London. ■ ' ■•■ ■'L ■■-.■' "'■■ The Arsenal Football Club have transferred Dr. Marshall, their Scot-, tish international inside-forward, to West Ham United. Marshall will be known as the £1000-a-match player,asi he was secured by Arsenal from .Glasgow Rangers, at a fee of- about £4000 and appeared in- only four League games. West Ham have paid about^ £3000 for his services. In an international hockey match' at Liverpool recently England defeated Wales by 6 goals to 2.
