Rugby players in Wellington have not been wanting for opportunities of getting into trim for championship play, set down to begin today. All the clubs contesting the senior A first division competition have had special matches, for which they should be all the better in setting out for championship points. Indications are that keen competition will again be the order and performance will attract keen atteption in view of the selection of the New Zealand team for the tour of the Home countries. Wellington has been well represented in New Zealand teams,of recent years, and it will have, along with other centres, candidates in plenty this season. The fact that most of last year's Wellington representatives in> the New Zealand team are again pressing claims should not cause others* to imagine that they will not be in the running. Reputation does very often give players an advantage, but, whatever past performance may have been, the players will have to show merit this season and there should be a chance for all, though the system of trials to be employed does not eliminate the element of luck. Wellington's players will have five series of championship matches before the fortunate ones are nominated for the trials. The senior competitions, it seems, are j to be conducted upon much the same lines as last year.
