REUNION SMOKO

A very successful reunion of returned men in the. district controlled by the Kilbirnie, Lyall Bay, and Melrose auxiliary committee of the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association was held at the headquarters in Bay Road, Kilbirnie. on the eve of Anzac Day. Visitors from the neighbouring auxiliaries at Hataitai, Miramar, and Seatoun were also present., Mr. Donald Gunn, chairman of the, local auxiliary, presided. The following toasts were.honoured: "The King" (the chairman), "The R.S.A." (Captain S. Frickleton, V.C., reply, Major Kirk), "Fallen Comrades" (Mr. J. N. Wickens), "The Auxiliary Committee" (Mr. B. Cull, reply, the chairman), "The Ladies" (Mr, F. BarJey), "Donors" (Mr. H. M. Harris), "The Press" (Mr. C. T. Brown). The singing of "Requiem" by Mr. G. ,F. East, which followed the toast to "Fallen Comrades," was particularly impressive. During the evening items were given by Messrs. Henare Tahiwi, H. Fish, G. Wood, and G. Tyman. The accompanist was' Mr. G., Durrant. Mr. P. F. Coira, as orderly officer, ably conducted the night's operations with a running fire of humorous remarks, and the fatigue party were Messrs.' Wickensi Couper,-Blair, Barley, and McLeod. In his remarks, the chairman touched on the need for all to pull together and explained how this objective could be gained by patronising the. social room which had been established at headquarters. He paid tribute to the willing spirit shown by the returned, men, particularly those unemployed, in the assistance towards establishing the headquarters, and also acknowledged the help received from the public by way of gifts. ;
