FALSE PRETENCES

CARPENTER GAOLED

Eight months' imprisonment was imposed by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, in two cumulative sentences of four months' imprisonment each, on William. Alexander Phillips, aged 57, a carpenter. ■The 'charges on which he was sentenced were that, he obtained £38 from, Annie Ellen Bradbury' at Masterton by a false pretence and that he obtained £7 from Emily Annie Freeman at Wellington by a false pretence. He . pleaded guilty to these charges and also to a charge of failing to comply with the terms of his release on probation, for which he was convicted' and discharged. In 1933, said Detective-Sergeant L. Eevell, the accused met Miss Bradbury at Masterton and persuaded her to have a bach built on a section she owned at Tawa Flat, telling her he knew- a tenant for it. She gave him £38 for the timber and he spent £18 18s on timber, with which he built bach. He kept the rest of the money. By the same means he obtained £7 from Miss Freeman. In his statement to Detective F. N. Robinson,' he admitted that the representations were false and said he had made them to get the job of building the baches. His probationary licence had been cancelled! and he automatically went back, to prison. 'He had.a list of previous convictions.. • .
