VICEREGAL.

The Governor-General received at Government House yesterday morning Mr. H. H. Sterling, C.M.G., chairman of the New Zealand Government Railways Board, who is leaving for England early next week, and-formally presented to him his Badge as a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St.. George—an honour which was conferred upon him by his Majesty the King on the occasion of the Nmv Year. Sir R. A. Anderson, a director of the Bank of New Zealand, arrived from the south today. A cable message received from Melbourne announces the death of Mr. Richard Robert Martin, who was. for some years chief Reform Party .organiser. He served in that capacity when the late Right Hon. W. F. Massey.was Prime Minister, and was well known to Reform members of Parliament of that time. He later went to Tasmania, where he was in business until his health broke down some years ago. He is survived by his widow, .who resides in Wellington, and two children. Mr. Percy Butler, who has been a member of the "Evening Post" jobbing staff for the past six years, and who is shortly leaving for Australia, was presented with a set of carvers by his colleagues in the jobbing department this week. The presentation was made by Mr. J. Griffiths, who expressed regret at Mr. Butler's departure and offered good wishes for the future. Word has been received in Dunedin of the death of Dr. Frankin H. Martin, a distinguished surgeon in America, telegraphs "The Post's" Dunedin correspondent. In 1924, with Dr. William Mayo and three other leading American surgeons, he paid a visit to New Zealand and Australia, attending .the congress >in Auckland. Later they toured through New Zealand and spent a couple of days in Dunedin, where Dr. Mayo delivered the inaugural address at the opening of the medical session. Mr. S. J. Baker, who is leaving next week after five years' service on the reading and ■ literary staffs of "The Evening Post," with the object of taking up a journalistic appointment in Sydney, was met by his colleagues of the literary staff today. In presenting a cheque to Mr. Baker, the editor (Mr. J. Parker) said that it was always difficult to say farewell to a departing colleague because of the comradeship existing among the, members of the "Evening Post" literary staff. Mr. Parker referred to the ability shown by Mr. Baker, and. said that his progress in Australia would be watched with the keenest interest by those he , was leaving. , Mr. Baker took with him the best wishes of his colleagues, their good will, and bright hopes for the future. Sinclair (Napier) are staying at the Hotel St. George. Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Andrews (Palmerston North), Dr. Yates- (Palmerston North), and Mr. Fj Steinmuller (Palmerston North) are staying at the Royal Oak Hotel. . Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Rogers (Sydney), Mr. and Mrs. Marshall (Sotorua), Mr. and Mrs. W. Taylor (Dunedin), and Mrs.'. A. O. Russell (Christchurch) are staying at the Midland Hotel. Mr. L. J. Jeily (Waipukurau),-Mr. and Mrs. Knight (Feilding), Mr. and Mrs. J. Horspool (Auckland), Messrs. B. Corrigan and H. N. Webb (Wangariui), C. A, Jeffs (Feilding), Mr. and Mrs. E. Laye, Messrs. H. H. Harrison and J. Blake (Auckland), J. Canton and E. Blake (London), H. Marshall, L. C. Dunbar, J. Gascoyne, and L. i Sanderson (Napier) are staying at the Empire Hotel.
