2000 SQUARE MILES

TERRITORY DEVASTATED

RELIEF BY AEROPLANES

(Received April 23, 12.35 p.m.)

TOKIO, April 22.

• An aeroplane survey shows that tht earthquake devastated 2000 square miles of territory stretching from Shirchiku to Taichu, and, inland, as far as the central mountain range.

It is apparent that many villages were wiped out.

Scores of men were trapped in gold^ copper, and coal mines in the affected areas. '

The gir corps'dropped relief bundles and medical supplies to the villagers in the mountains, mostly Chinese and Taiwanese, who were trapped when landslides buried the railway tunnels and'mountain passes, preventing relief workers obtaining contact with them.

Many sections of the island railways are a total loss.

Owing to the shortage of coffins, the • villagers are using beer barrels for containing the corpses. ''..'.,.

Minor shocks continue.
