TOKIO, April 22,

The latest official estimates of the casualties suffered at Formosa, as a result- of the earthquake are 3165 dead, 9478 injured, and 31,000 houses destroyed or partially destroyed.

It is estimated that the people rendered, homeless approach 100,000. Relief workers are now beginning to cope with the situation.

There have been forty minor shakes recorded since 6 a.m. on Sun« day.

Dispatches from Taihoku report that the people # are huddling together in panic owing to further shocks and alarming rumours df tidal waves.

Although the entire island has been shaken, the biggest toll has been confined to an area 40 miles in diameter north of Taichu, especially in the Toyahara district. Naiho reports 600 dead, Kamoika 450 dead, and that the town is now burning.

All the British missionaries have been located, and are safe.

ORPHANED CHILDREN.

At Toyahara, where there are 1300 dead, 90 per cent, of the houses were razed to the ground. Few1 were un-
