A FAST TRACK

GOOD DAY AT AUCKLAND

INTERESTING FINISHES

(Special from ,"Ear/y Bird.") AUCKLAND, April 20,

The weather was excellent and the track very fast, providing a splendid day's sport for a largo ■.attendance at Ellorslie , today. The tbtalisator investments were £40,331 10s, against £35,582 on the first day last, year, an increase of £4749 10s. After Sirona had set a sound pace for a mile and a quarter, Gay Blonde had no difficulty in running to the front and winning the Great Northern Oaks by threeparts of a length. Astarth, the only other runner, was three lengths further back; The lime, 2inin 33sec, was a race record. Finishing in fine Btylc, Gay Marigold registered a good win in the President's llaudicap. Korokio and' King's Archer made the running most of the way, closely attended by Sinking Fund, Sir Abb, and Spotting Blood. Both Gay .Marigold and Knight of Australia came from well back, the former winning by three-quarters of a length, with Sir Abb a 1 head away third. Sporting Blood,1 Gay Rose, Tybalt. Mungatoon,, Dolrain, and King's Archer were next. ! Verdcii was always near the front in the Brighton Hurdles and won comfortably from .Wee Pat. The latter was giving the leaders a good start entering the straight, and finished splendidly to beat Master Musk, who also came home well, by a head. Maunga King was a fair fourth. Val Watch fell at the second fence, and Tudor at the last when he looked likely to run second. Billy Boy ran a fair race, coming from a long way back, EASTER HANDICAP RECORD. Ecd Manfred snatched a head victory over Coronis in the Easter Handicap. Star Artist arid Gipsy Moth set a fast pace from Diatomous, Coronis, Gay Seton, British Columbia, Scotland, and Eercatu 'to the home turn. In the straight Coronis looked the winner, but Keel Manfred just got up. Gay Seton fought on well for third place, with Caliente a surprise fourth. Diatomous weakened into fifth place, ahead of Gay Broney, Mother Superior, Rereatu, RuUniit, and Kelly. The time was a race record. FAST CHAMPAGNE STAKES. A corafoi table win was scored by Dv Barry in the Champagne Stakes, whyjh was also a race record for the six furlongs. Galileo set a fast pace in iront, but weakened in the straight, and Dv Barry came on to win, with plenty in reserve, from lliiut Montlo.- The hitter was cut back' early, 'but finished rcbolutbly under pressure to bent Galilee. Gay Sheik, who disappointed, was fourth, and 11 Ditce last. MANGERE STEEPLEOHASE. | Thcspia led all the way in the Mangere Steeplechase, and won comfortably. Clan Ronald attempted to run up to him several limes, but Thcspis proved too .speedy and drew out to win by four lengths. London was battling on well in third place, two lengths away, but Ruby Meteor and Mia Stella were, never dangerous. The winner. pulled up sound, and looks a good prospect as a steeplechaser. PLATO MAKES GOOD SHOWING. The Onslow Stakes was won by a good type of colt in Plato, who was always prominent and, after following Brilliant Acre, Triune, Teak, and Fleetwind into the straight, finished like a good one under pressure to beat Fleetwind, who also made a game effort, by a length and a half. Happy Landing came from well back to finish third, half a length away. Velocipede was fourth, followed by Teak, Triune, Johnnie Walls, and Light Comedy. After being handily behind Expectancy. Nun Nicer, Adalene, Jewelled Girdle, and King Key to -the home turn, Royal Secret came through in good stylu to win the Eden Handicap fairly comfortably from King Rey. The latter's effort was a good one. Gay Egypt stayed on well two lengths away, -with Miss Lulu, also coming from well back, fourth. Sunny Downs, rather unlucky, was next, ahead of Adalene, Enge, Nun Nicer, Lady Diana, and Werohiti. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
