QUALIFYING ROUNDS

Though many competitors played better golf in the afternoon on Saturday at Heretaunga in the qualifying rounds of the Provincial Championship, the greatest reversal of form was that of J. H. Black, whose 79 of the morning was eclipsed by the best round of the day, a 71, compiled as 'follows:— " . Out, 448434553, 35. In, 454534344, 30. . It was a round, moreover, of scarcely any fortuitous gifts. This imt J. L. Black from eighth place to second, pride of position remaining with J. P. Hornabrook, who repeated his card of the morning, a 73 made up, in the afternoon, as follows: — Out, 543434445, 3G. I ... .. In, 454542445, 37. Hfynabrook showed that he can redeem errors.'.At'the, thirteenth his miss-hit second fronv J;he' left edge of the fairway landed in the bunker amongst the trees, ran up the bank, and remained embedded ill'thick grass. A magnificent shot from this unpromising lie lay not twelve feet from the cup. It was perhaps too much to expect that he should sink the putt for a 4. One of his few mistakes was in fail' ing 'to get ' Well out of the right-hand bunker at the next hole. ' Judging from the morning's golf two SOb would have qualified, but only 159's got in. S.M. Watson, the former Cambridge player, beat his morning round by 4 «trokes as follows:— , Out, 443534454, 30. In, 443044354, 37. He is a steady player, good from the tees and on the greens, and if his iron play were as useful, would be hard to beat. liana Wagg spoilt the good work of- the morning by coming back in 444543457. Normal figures would have given him fourth place, but he put his strong second, over the back of the green into rough, and, fearful of going across the green again, and hoping to just surmount the bank- and trickle down, laid the foundations of a series of troubles. F. Page (Manor Park) showed up well. His afternoon round was 38 out, but he made 464433457 back, with an indifferent lie at the eleventh, and an attempted explosion shot which somehow he took clean at the eighteenth. With standard figures for these holes he might have qualified second. F.'Kember (Hutt) played steady golf. He was out in 36 in the afternoon, but found difficulties at the short fifteenth, where he was down the bank, but, unlike his partner. W. J. Davidgc, also down the bank.' did not sink a twelve-footer when be had got up. H. A. Black played consistently steady golf in both rounds, but was not altogether at home on the greens. Amongst those just squeezed out were .1. P. Mortland (Tnihape). SI. 70-160 and M. K. Moore 79, SI-160. THE QUALIFIERS. The following players qualified for the Provincial Championship: — J. P.
