ANNUAL MEETINGS
HUTT VALLEY CLUB
The sixth annual general meeting of th« Hutt Valley Chess Club, held recently in the Methodist Schoolroom, was attended by a dozen members. Mr. G. L. Gieeon, the president, occupied the chair. Th« annual report stated that the club's two teams made a good showing in the Wellington Chess League's B grade competition, especially the No. 2 team, which was only defeated once. Two friendly matches were played during the season, the Club's representatives defeating Brooklyn, and tying with the Shell Club. Both the club's annual competitions are marked incom-plete-^the contest for the club championship (in which Messrs. I. E. Kawnsley, J. King, and ~R. Gilkison have to play off) and the handicap tourney to decide the custody of the handsome silver cup donated by Mr. J. W. Wood. The balance-sheet shows that the club has managed to pay its way during the past season, thankg to valued assistance received from the local Methodist Church authorities. The report and balance-sheet were adopced unanimously. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. W. A. Fisher; vicepresidents, Messrs. H. W. Maiden, E. W. Meek, and W. R. Carter; hon. secretary, Mr. R. Gilkison; hon. librarian, Mr. J. W. Wood; hon. auditor, Mr. E. W. Meek: delegates to Wellington Chess League, Messrs. R. Gilkison and J. W. Wood; committee, Messrs. E. V. Blazek, J. King, C. R. Kent, J. W. Wood, and Mrs. S.Wilson; match committee, Messrs. I. E. Rawnsley and W. A. Fisher. It was decided to nominate Mr. Gilkison for the league's champion of champions contest, and to enter a team for the B grade mter-club competition. It is proposed to vary the personnel of the team frequently to give all members an opportunity of taking part in inter-club fixtures. Mr. Kent was appointed to take charge of the ladder competitions, which will, it ia hoped, do much to improve the standard of play in the club. An active canvass is to be made for!new members to fill gaps caused by players leaving the district. A hearty vote of thanks to last year's officebearers closed the meeting.
