RARE PICTURES FOR SALE
Mr. J. P. Morgan, senior partner of the well-known banking house of that name, has offered six of the rarest pictures in his famous collection for sale. It is estimated that the market value of the paintings exceeds £300,000. Two have already been bought by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the remaining four will, it is expected, enter private or public collections Better known as a buyer of works ol art than a seller, Mr. Morgan was asked the reasons prompting his action. "I have no special reason," he said, "except that I understand that the market for paintings. is good at the moment. I thought it might be a good idea to reduce my collection to get my estate into more manageable form. ] am 67 years old and I am getting Jlder all the time." More of his pictures may be placed on the market at a later date. The six included in the present offering are Rubens's "Anne of Austria"; twin portraits by Hals, of Heer and Mevrouw Bodolphe; Ghirlandaio's portrait of Giovanna Tornabuoni, a Lawrence picture of Miss Farren, and an altar triptych by.
