SEAMAN'S DEATH

CEREMONY ON MAKURA A solemn and dignified ceremony was associated with the removal this morning from the Makura of the body of Mr. Joseph Whittaker Bickerton, the young Auckland seaman who fell from aloft and was killed on the last voyage of the ship to San Francisco. The body was brought to Wellington by the Makura yesterday, and yesterday and this morning the ship's flags were flown at half-mast. When the body was transferred to the shore today the ship's company formed up on the saloon deck and the bugler sounded the "Last Post." Members of the Seamen's Union were on the wharf, and they marched with the casket, which was draped with a Union Jack, from the Taranaki Street Wharf to the Monowai, lying at the Queen's Wharf. The body is to be sent by the Monowai to Auckland, where the deceased's mother resides.
