STOLEN PETROL
OFFENCES BY TAXI DRIVERS
An unexplained shortage in the contents of petrol tanks at the service station of Burke Bros., Ltd., in Ohepu Road caused the proprietors and Detective J. G. Long to keep watch on the premises for some nights. They saw two taxi drivers, employed by the Kilbirnie Cab Company, visit the pumps in the early hours of the morning, and as a result, the men, Arthur Frisbee Collins, aged 34, and Leslie John Withers, aged 26, were charged in the Magistrate's Court yesterday with stealing 327 gallons of petrol valued at £27 3s 4d, four gallons valued at 6s Bd, and seven gallons valued at Us Bd, from Burke Bros., Ltd. They pleaded not guilty to the major charge, but admitted the two minor charges. Mr. J. H. Luxfprd, S.M., sentenced Withers to three months' imprisonment with hard labour on the major charge and placed him on probation for two £ears on the two lesser charges. Collins was placed on probation for two years on all three charges. The two men are to make restitution of the value of the petrol, paying half each at'the" rate to be fixed by the Probation Officer. .
