YACHT RACING

EVANS BAY CLUB

CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS

The honorary racing secretary of the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club has supplied the following table of championship points. Points are allotted as follows:—rFor crossing the line first, 6 points; for crossing the line second, 4 points; for crossing the line third, 2 points; for starting in a race, 1 point; for finishing in a race, 1 point. This holds good even where there are only two starters, i.e., the first boat obtains 6 points, plus 2 points for starting and finishing, and the second (and last) boat 4 points plus 2 points. ' KEEL YACHTS. Although there are sufficient boats in the Bay to justify two classes of keel yachts, entries, on the whole, have been pooivandit became necessary/a short time ago to merge them into the one class. In the list given below the first three races were held for two classes, and the last one for a combined class. These points are complete up to Saturday, February, 23. Romp and Wairere are the two most likely contenders, and when it is borne in mind that Romp failed to start in one race, it will be seen that they are very evenly matched. Rawene, of course, has most points, but these were mostly obtained in second-class races and now the classes are merged she is likely to lose her advantage. Points are:—Rawene, 26; Wairere I, 24; Romp, 20; Viola, 16; Annetta, 13; Una, 12; Galatea, 10; Kestrel, 7; Spray, 3. '■ RONA BOATS. The Rona-Jellicoe class, racing from scratch, has produced the most interesting group of championship points of all classes. The four boats starting and finishing in each race have only two points difference between them—three of them dead-heating—surely the most convincing reply ever made to opponents of scratch racing. Points are:—Jannet, 16; Idono, 14; Kitty, 14; Tassie, 14; Lavina, 5 (two races D.N.F.). FIRST-CLASS CENTREBOARDERS. As usual, the Kio II is well ahead of the rest of her class, having a margin of 8 points on the second boat Southern Maid.' June is close behindwi'th 2 points less, but the other boats are not in the picture. This is explained by the fact that these three boats between them have shared exclusively the first three positions in every race. Points are:—Kio 11, 24; Southern Maid, 16; June, 14; Ariki, 6; Kotara, 6! Rob Roy, 5; Advance, 4 (one race D.N.S.). ' .■ SECOND-CLASS CENTREBOARDERS There are two resails to be held shortly for this class, so that only two races are available for allotting championship points, and the results consequently are not very conclusive. Points are:—Damfino, 16; Vailima,,7; Poneke, 6 (one race D.N.S.); Huia, 5; Maputu, 3. IDLE-ALONGS. The Mayfair has had a remarkable number of succesess this season, and this, of course, is reflected in the tally of championship points. The Vampire, however, is close behind, and should give her a good tussle for the pennant. Three out of the last four boats are recent acquisitions to the .club, and conr sequently have only started in two races. :.■.',..■' Points are:—Mayfair, 28; Vampire, 24; Pegaway, 15; Dora, 10; Wee Too, 4 (three races D.N.S.); Gladys, 4 (two races D.N.S.); Golden Ray, 4 (two races D.N.S.); Resolute, 4 (three races D.N.S.); Cutty Sark, 2. TAURANGAS. There is a very considerable margin between the first and second boats in this class, and it looks as though Margaret will certainly capture the pennant for the 1934-35 season. Points are:—Margaret, 38; Wee May, 16; Midge, 14; Matchbox, 14; Betty, 13; Imp, 12; Ajax, 8 (one race D.N.S.); Penguin, 6 (four races D.N.S.); Peter Pan, 5 (two races D.N.S.); Wai, 2 (four races D.N.S.); Weka, 2 (four races D.N.S.). '■■ •"■■ LAUNCHES. There were only three starters in this class for most of the season. The Felix has a very decided advantage at present, but if the Edna had been racing more consistently she should have run the Felix a very close second. Points are:—Felix, 38; Isobel, 22 (one race D.N.S.); Edna,' 18 (two • races D.N.S.).' - ■■■ . . SPEED-BOATS. It was expected to have four boats racing in this class but only three eventuated, and of these the Irene G started in only one race. Points arc:—Spindrift, 34; Miss Taubman, 25{ Irene (V?
