MOTORING ALONG BEACHES

(To the Editor.) x

Sir,—Last year a flying machine pilot, I believe, was prosecuted and fined for flying along and landing oh prohibited areas of beaches at i Paraparaumu. This summer many motorists should have been : similarly ■: dealt, with for careering along, our beaches amongst hundreds of children at play on the sands. I trust that before Easter the Hutt County, Council, as the controlling body, and the Automobile Association will take prompt steps to prohibit future motoring on the popular areas of our magnificent beaches stretching from Faekakariki to Paraparaumu and Waikanae. Our, beaches are rapidly increasing in popularity. They are natural playgrounds;, and are -the;-only safe places where .children can be left caije free to dig arid play on the sands. Yet cars speed along there indifferent to the frights they cause tiny children scattered about. . Obviously children while preoccupied in digging and playing in the sand are prevented by the roar of the surf from hearing the approach of motor-cars ,and cycles, and why should they have to keep a' lookout for such trespassers? Motorists can

find ample pleasure in keeping to the roadway skirting the shores without disturbing and scattering young and old on the beach. I witnessed the narrow escapes of several tiny tots and saw accidents narrowly averted almost at the water's edge by rapid motorcars and flying motor-bikes in daytime and at nights. Will the powers that be legislate and put up notice boards to protect our sunny shores from such thoughtless motorists before children are maimed or killed? . There is no need to restrict motor-parking on beaches or collecting fish and luggage from boats, as this does not endanger lives.—l am, etc., , ' ;

SUNBATHER,
