*,;;•:(Received February 12, 2 p.m:) : .-: MELBOURNE, This Day. Three men who were, arrested-aftei an exciting pursuit by Customs officials were, charged with having opium in their possession. Each was fined £100 and order to be imprisonedruntil the fines were paid. Counsel: for the Crown stated that 500 ounces of-opium valued at between £500 and £1000 had -been found in parcels thrown away by the men during the chase. Customs officers at. Melbourne early; in the morning of February 3 effected a big opium seizure. They saw threa men acting suspiciously in a. flat-bot-tomed boat near an overseas, steamed berthed in the River Yarra. Later! they saw them row away and transfer, something to a motor-van further dowri the river. . Customs officers in cars • pursued the motor-van at high speed, firing many shots at its tires. Even* tualiy they overtook the van and ar« rested the trio.. Quite a number of tins of opium were afterwards picked up along the route of the pursuit.
