THE PECK SHIELD ■ • . ' ' - ' 1 ',' 1 ; • .

A RECORD ENTRY

A record nuriibei\o£ swimmers took part in the annual long-distance race.,for the Peckl Shield, held on Saturday afternoon. Out of a handicapped list of 90,:'-there were 7G starters, and of these 63 completed the distance. Conditions for the race-were the best yet experienced. A light'southerly, breeze produced only a slight chop, and the water ■■temperature': was near the 70 mark. Bright sunshine enabled-the swimmers to await the start in comparative comfort, and allowed a,large number of spectators to watch the race from the breastwork. The course was the same as that of last year, but about 400 yards longer. Starting from a ledge on the Dock Wharf, the competitors had to swim the length of the breastwork, turn around a boat moored off the end of Aotea Quay, and return to touch the Dock Wharf at the starting point. The total distance was about one and a half miles. '■'■'■ First off were the two girl entrants, Misses Adamson and Hurren; ■ Mjbs Hurren used an overarm stroke, and .soon went ahead of Miss Ada'inson, who etuck to breaststroke.-'-. MrJ E. B;- Hughes; the starter, sent each group'away on time with a minimum of delay, and sobn the first thousand yards was dotted with 'swimmers. ■ ■-; --' • : ; .- ■-.- - .-:-.- C. Jones (Worser Bay)j who went off the ledge five minutes after the two girls, soon outdistanced; his companions, swimming an. . easy _ crawl. At the turn, his chances of being, home first looked bright; and throughout the second lap he was not challenged. ■ M. Chevin, of Hiitt, who occupied second place, gained nothing on Jones, but rather dropped backj for be was about 70yds behind , when Jones touched the wall. Next home was P. Ballard, of Maramii B, "about; 120 yds behind; Chevin, 'with J. Rosier his teammate, in fourth position.' C. Eversleigh, of Maramii A, finished very, strongly in fifth position. •'•■.' .", :.,■.
