STEP TOWARDS TREATY
TRADE WITH AUSTRALIA

TOKIO, February 8.
The "Nichi Nichi," in an editorial, says that preliminary Japanese negotiations with Canberra.regarding a trade pact are reported-to have ended with the understanding that Japan should maintain her purchases of Australian goods, and that Australia should buy more Japanese goods, especially silk and cotton goods, on'the principle of reciprocity. After this the drafting |of a treaty would begin.
Japan has been buying at the rate of 4 to 1 from' Australia, which is a most one-sided form of business. Japan was glad that 'Australia was recognising the importance of Japanese relations and-friendship. W--
