IMPROVEMENT EXPECTED
Special forecast for Wellington:— ■ Fresh but slowly moderating south-easterly winds. Weather dull and misty, at first , but gradually clearing. Temperatures cool. . - '.....'. The general forecast: is for; southeasterly and north-easterly winds fresh to strong at first about Cook: Strait, but decreasing gradually and.-else-where moderate. Further scattered rain is likely over the eastern and northern portions of the North Island, but otherwise fair to fine "weather is expected with cool to moderate temperatures.
Yesterday morning a shallow depression had just crossed the North Island without having much rain.in its passage. During the day, however,, tha northern portion of it deepened and moved back westwards. South-easter-ly winds consequently became strong in place about and north of Cook Strait,;and during the night rain fell in many localities from Nelson and Marlboroiigh northwards. On the east coast and in the central interior of the North Island there were some heavy falls. East Cape reported 1.60 inches, Gisborne 1.90, and Cape Palliser. 1.05 inches. Temperatures have fallen ta about the normal summer values. This morning the wind was decreasing and pressure beginning to rise over th» North Island. :
At Auckland dull weather has prevailed. Yesterday afternoon a drizzling rain commenced and showers followed throughout the night. Light breezea prevailed from between south-east and north-east. ',"■■'• '
At Wellington, although it was frequently threatening yesterday and ! a few light showers passed over, from the eastwards, it was not until shortly after 7 p.m. that rain set in in earnest. Thereafter until about 9'o'clock this morning it was fairly continuous, but, except between 11.30 p.m.'and 6 a.m., it was very light. The total, at Kel--1 urn was .31 inches. Lower Hutt, however, only had .08 inches. This morning\the atmosphere was thick; and misty. A moderate to strong southeasterly to southerly wind has blown throughout, and temperatures' have been on_ the cool side. . '.'■''
Christchurch had sunny weather from midday onwards but in the evening it clouded over again and a trace of rain fell at 10.30 p.m. It :was still overcast this morning. A north-easter-ly breeze has prevailed. '' Dunedin was the most fortunate of the centres having exceptionally fine and sunny weather with' a northeasterly breeze. =
