CUTTING FIRE-BREAKS
PAYMENT OF STANDARD
WAGES
The question of the wages to be-paid for fire-break work to protect city reserves and plantations was discussed at a special meeting of the reserves committee yesterday afternoon. About 170 men on relief are employed at this work, and the point was raised by them that this work,- being essential'tto.v.-ttie safety of the reserves, was a'Sstatidarfi one,, and standard wages should'therei fore be paid. The chairman, Councillor J. Burns, and other members of the committee agreed that the.work was a standard one and that standard wages should be paid! but-were of opinion that finances available would not permit of the retention of the whole of the 170 men at standard ratci.
