AUSTRALIAN RAILWAYS

UNIFICATION SCHEME

PORT AUGUSTA-ADELAIDE

CANBERRA, February 3.

The Federal Cabinet has decided not to proceed with its rail gauge unifica; tion scheme, involving an expenditure of £20,000,000 over a period of years, until the Port Augusta-Adelaide rail standardisation work is completed about two years hence.

A message dated February 1 stated that Cabinet had decided to proceed with the construction of a" line of standard railway gauge,' linking Port Augusta and" Adelaide, the estimated cost of which is £1,169,000. This was expected to represent the first step towards the complete unification of the Australian railway system.
