CENTRE CARNIVAL

A NEW RECORD

A large number of entries and keen racing in all events characterised the carnival held at Te Aro Baths on Saturday afternoon, by. the Wellington Centre ol\ Iho Xcw- Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. Smooth water, little wind, and bright sunshine made conditions excellent for swimming. A large number of followers of the sport attended. D. L. ..Plank ' (Muranni) had little trouble in gaining the 50yda title, previously held by W. Cameron (Lyull Bay). Plank drew an outside position, and led for the last 25yds, his time being equal to that put up by Cameron at the Kidditord Baths last year. The other starters appeared to close in' on the centre A SomervcU (Hutt) beat J. Blakeley (Lyali Bay), by a touch for second place. In the 100 yds ladies' championship Miss S. Campbell (Hutt) led all the way. Miss Waller (University) was second at the turn, but was passed near the finish by Miss W. Pritchard (Hutt). Six started in the race for the 440 yds championship. 11. Pelham (Lyall Bay) took the lead early, but J. Williams (Lyall Bay) soon passed him, and, with J C Blakeley close behind, made the pace' At the fifth turn, Williams -was half' a length ahead of Blakeley, with Pelham close behind. Plank withdrew at the seventh turn, where Blakeley showed signs ,of gaining. Half-way through the eighth length, Blakeley, quickening iiis stroke, passed Williams. At the turn, ho was about three yards ahead, and', drawing away. Williams then commenced' his spurt, which brought him to within a length of Blakeley at the finishing rope.: Pelham, eight yards back, was third, and J. K. Thwaites, about 15yds behind' Pelham, fourth. The time, smin 42 l-ssee, bettered Blakeley's previous centre record by 2 l-ssec. The standard of the diving was a little better than that of last year. JR. Tuppen (Hutt), the holder, had to give of. his best to stave off the challenge of H. Tremewan (Hutt). The Worser Bay Banner breaststroke relay was won by Wellington by about 20yds from Hutt. An interestinggame resulted when Maranui met Lyall Bay in the concluding match of the first round of the A grade water polo competition. Maranui early went into the lead when D. Plank scored with a fine backhand throw. Shortly after, J. Meikle evened up with a long dropping shot which slipped past the Maranui goalkeeper. Lyall Bay then attacked strongly, but could not penetrate Maranui's defence, and the game ended in a draw. Mr. A. Sommerville was the referee. ■ RESULTS IN DETAIL.
