CITY MILK SUPPLY

SHORTAGE UNLIKELY

NEW SOURCES DRAWN ON

Although the abnormally "dry' weather is having its effect upon - the supply, ofi milk available to the Wellington Gity Council, no difficulty-is anticipated in securing a ■ sufficient supply for the city during the- re-, mainder of the summer season. ■ ■

In the thirty-mile area, being* 'the area on-the city side of the Rimutakas and the top of the Horokiwi Valley, the milk available to the city is down by approximately one-eighth as compared with the corresponding period last year. On the ' other hand there is. more milk available from the .Otaki district than was the .case at this time a year ago.

The present position is that all.thfe milk, available • from the JhirtyTinile area, approximating 4400 gallons daily, is being brought to the city for use, besides which the whole; of the. Otaki supply of 3300 gallons daily is also being used for whole-milk or sweet cream.

The department has commenced to draw milk from Paraparaumu, and will soon be1 drawing supplies -from Tc Horo.' Afterwards, if necessary,' supplies can.be obtained from Waikanae, Kuku, Manakau. and Levin. . .Producers most greatly affected appear .to. be; the nearby farmers, prO: dilcing milk on the hills' adjacent to Wellington, and most of these venders are buying freely from the Milk Department, which is supplying them with increasing^ amounts of. milk,-' at' present between'soo-gallons and 600 gallons daily, as well as large quantities of cream. '

Though pastures are in rather a bad way at present, there is the consolation that the early summer produced unusually good crops of hay, and there-' fore the position is better, in this respect that it was last year. - -
