CRIMINAL CHARGES
"VERY MODERATE NUMBER"
Four true bills,,. and .one "no bill" ivcre returned by the Grand Jury today at the opening of the quarterly sessions of. the Supreme Court. His Honour Mr. Justice Smith is presiding.
The Grand Jury empanelled was as follows:—Messrs. S. S. Dean (foreman), C, A. Edmeades, Henry DiggesSmith, Alan K. Gray, Frank H. Blakely, Thos. B. Gusscott, Nigel D. Blair, Eustace Jenkins, Charles F. Murphy, Robert H. D. Nichol,' John Maloney, E. C. Jack, J. E. Rawnsley, Samuel J. Pilgrim, Arthur Rait, H. W Osborn, Henry J. Knight, John Robertson, R. H. Lee; H. S. Hart, J. F.-Hard-grave, A. G. Rough, Joseph Thornley. "There 'are only five indictments for your consideration, which I think is-a very moderate number for such a large district''as Wellington," said "his Honour in the course of his charge to the Grand Jury. There were four cases involving 'offences against p'jpperty and one charge of negligent driving involving the safety of persons. It was a matter of satisfaction that there was no charge relating to sex matters. The most important and most extensive case., was that • against ' Ernest Mabin Gilmour and Charles* Ernest Vickers. That indictment consisted' of 12 counts, all arising out of the same series of transactions.' His Honour explained'the nature1 of the charges at some length. True bills were returned in the following cases:— Reginald Howan; 'charged with obtaining money "by a false pretence (two charges). Charles Gordon Mackessack, charged with obtaining credit while an undischarged bankrupt (two charges). John Stewart,, charged with negligently driving a 'motor vehicle and thereby causing death. Charles Ernest Vickers and Ernest Mabin Gilmour, charged wjlth conspiring to- defraud, and with false pretences jointly and'with false pretences —two charges vi against Vickers, and seven charges ' against- * Gilmour, severally. " >"'.,. No bill was returned in. the case of Hubert Reginald Heath, who was discharged, "as" reported'elsewhere. ' _
