NOTES FROM RICCARTON

(Special to the "Evening Pott.")

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.

H. Turner has decided to set up as a trainer at Riccarton. He has resided there for a few years, prior- .to which he was in the Waikato, and has made a wide circle of friends. Apart from race riding ho has beon very popular during training operations through his willingness to ride' work for trainers, his services being in special request to school horses over the hurdles country. Mr. A. S. Jones, of South Canterbury, will be his first patron with two horses who will be prepared for jumping races. One of them is High Speed, brother to Vajves by Tractor —Bothina. The other is a seven-year-old mare who has done no racing but has been hunted for' two seasons. She is by Buff Gauntlet, the dam being by Heroism from Bothayn Maid. Colombo, tho Paper' Mone- three-year-old from C. Davey's stable, had an unlucky trip to Trenthain/ •He showed promising form on the last day when he finished close to the' placed horses in the Kaitoke Handicap. - Unfortunately ho received a kick while on tho trip home and will require a spell. Davolo met with some injuries while racing at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Meeting in November and he has been off the scene ever since. It was hoped to have him icady for work again before now, but tho trouble has proved more serious than seemed probable. The rest will benefit him, as ho had some hard races early in the season, and when ho gets over tho effects of his mishap he should bo a good performer again. Great Star showed only moderate form' at Trentham last' week. The veteran has slipped back a lot this season and looks as if his daya of |ise.-
