" The general forecast for the Dominion, as a whole issued at noon today is for variable winds at first over'the southern half of the South Island. Otherwise winds will be moderate to strong north-westerlies which will reach gale force it times, in places abput Cook Strait. Wind* will becomo southerly in direction in the south after about 24 hours. The weather will still be gonerally unsettled with further rain, and sdme heavy falls may be'.expected'in tho central and southern districts. Temperatures will still bo mild. A deep cyclonic depression has beon situated over tho Tasman Sea during the last three days, and t has been moving gradually towards New ZoaJaid. Its centre this morning was lying to the west of the South Island. On. Saturday rain fell in the Auckland province and in tho far south, but elsewhere the weather was mainly fair and generally, warm and sultry. During and since Sunday, however, the rain has extended to most districts, and there have been some heavy falls in places about and to the north of .Cook Strait. Moderate/ to strong north-easterly, >or northerly winds -have prevailed, with gales, in exposed places. A change to south-easterlies occurred., last-night in the southern'portion of the^ South 'Island.? t ( , ' Auckland had a strong north-easterly wind on , Saturday! and Sunday.
