FILM INDUSTRY
NEW LEGISLATION
PASSED BY BOTH HOUSES
. The Cinematograph Amendment Bill had a quick passage through both Houses yesterday afternoon. In the House of Representatives both Government, and Opposition members showed an anxiety to place the measure on tho Statute Book, and in tho Council there was no debate following tho explanation of the Loader (the lion. E. Masters). In moving the second reading, the Leader'of the Council said that tho film industry in New Zealand had been in an unsatisfactory state for a considerable time past. Tho relationship between film renters, the exhibitors, and the public was such that it was causing a groat (leal of unrest. As the result of methods of trading cur; ried on by certain film interests in the country, an Order in Council had been issued for the purpose of preventing such practices, but it had been upset by the Supreme Court. The question did not rest there. There had been complaints of' monopolistic tendencies in-the industry, and a petition had been presented to the House of Representatives asking Parliament to rectify the position. The Industries and Commerce' Committee "of the House had held an inquiry into the, various aspects of tho industry,, and tho'present Bill was based on its recomrriemlations. ' The' Bill was-put through" all stages and passed.,. - '■
