A SHARP SHAKE

FELT IN THE WAIRARAPA

A fairly sevcro earthquake was felt in the Wairarapa district last evening, following ou a less pronounced shake on Wednesday. The shock was distinctly felt in Wellington. The time was 11.5 p.m. and the distance from Wellington was 60 miles. The shock was of a dual nature, a minor . one being followed by a much more pronounced tremor. No damage is reported. A Press Association message from Masterton says that a fairly severs earthquake was felt in the Wairarapa district at 11.6 o'clock last night, but no damage whatever _is reported. The shake was felt over a wide area from Pahiatua and Tinui southwards, being apparently most severe in the district between these places and Masterton. There were two distinct shocks, the second being the worse. Last night's shake, it is added, caused considerable alarm, but no damage, and appears to have been felt more severely between Masterton and Pahiatua. . . • .

A Pahiatua message states that th« earthquake, as felt there, was of a prolonged swaying motion. Minor trcmori followed. No damage was caused.
