A. sudden and dramatic climax occurred today iv a feud between two of the most socially prominent American families, when the 10-year-ola Gloria Vanderbilt, heiress to a 3,000,000-dollar fortune, brought a chambers action in tho Supremo Court, before Mr Justice CareWj to decide whether she should remain in the custody of her paternal annt ■ Mrs. Harry Payno Whitney, or of her own mother, Mrs. Gloria Vanderbilt.

'' Mrs. Vandei'bilt brought a suit recently to recover the child from Mrs. Whitney, who refuses to yield ou the grounds that plaintiff devotes too much time to social obligations, drinks oxeessively, and is otherwise unfit to \>Q the child's mother. Later it was learned that tho child chose the aunt, with whom she has been living for tho last two years. Previously the Judgo indicated that tho child's preference would carry great weight.
