THE NEW CHURCH

A HANDSOME BUILDING

Tho now Sacred Heart Church, in Britannia Street, Petone, will bo opened on Sunday morning by Archbishop Redwood, -who will oflieiato at Solemn High Mass. The church, which was erected as a memorial to the late Chaplain McMenamen, who was killed on tho Western Front during 1 lie Great War, is a handsome structure.

Tho architecture is of tho classic (Roman) type, and there is a tower. The church is built of reinforced concrete faced with pressed brick, and it will accommodate 600 people. The' organ loft is above tho vestibule, and tho choir will be seated beside the organ. The organ, which was built by Hill, Norman, and Beard, of Melbourne, is a beautiful instrument. The altar is of Homan design, and behind it thero is a magnificent stained-glass memorial window. The window was made in Munich and designed by Professor Fenerstein, who regards it as one of the finest he has ever designed. There is a special men's chapel attached to the side of the altar. To the right of the altar there is a large sacristy, and there is also a spacious room fitted up for the altar society. The confessionals are recessed in the side aisle walls. The clerestory is carried on eight large columns. The interior of the church is marked by dignity and simplicity.

Tlio architect is Mr. T. J. McCoskcr and the builders are J. 11. Mever and Co.
