HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
A meeting of. the/ Rhododendron, Azalea, and Magnolia Circle of the Wellington ' Horticultural Society was held on Tuesday evening, when a talk w.'is given by Mr. T. E. Y.'Seddon. The lecturer, who is a keen enthusiast, dealt most interestingly with his subject, covering the world distribution of the various species, the debt due to acl- [ venturous collectors in. inaccessible parts of the globe, and cultivation and j. treatment and. selection of tlio. different varieties recommended to be grown. The Taranaki and Wellington provinces were instanced as ideal for these plants, and practically all parts of the Houth Island, including the West Const, Canterbury, and Otago. Special reference was made to tho Dtuiodin Rhododendron Dell. Tho lecture was illustrated with a magnificent display of specimen blooms grown by Mrs. Lcthbridge, Turakina, Mrs. Knox Gilmer, and the lecturer, while Mr. W. 11. P. Barber, of Waikanae, exhibited fine seedling irises. Varieties of rhododendrons particularly noticed were Red Arboreum, Pink Arboreuni, Pink Grandee, Cornubi.i, Pink Pearl, Marquis of Lothian, and B. J. Seddon. Azaleas and magnolias were also dealt with. The next circle will deal with roses and i rifies.
