LORD MAYOR'S BALL
SELECTION OF GUESTS
"REPRESENTATIVE CITIZENS"
The Lord Mayor of Sydney, Alderman Parker, stated last week that it was his desire that the Lord Mayor's ball, for tho Duke of Gloucester should be truly representative of tho community. He hoped that his efforts in the civic entertainment of the Duke would befit the occasion.
It was explained that the guests would bo chosen from representative organisations functioning in the community, and not from individuals who could not claim a representative status.
Parliament, civic officials, the Church, the Army, tho Navy, the Air Porce, the University Senate, educational, scientific, and charitable organisations will be represented by their main officials. A number of individuals havo recently signed a book at the Town Hall. Although the Lord Mayor would not discuss this, it was definitely understood that this would not help the signatories very much.
The "Daily Telegraph" says: "Tho guest list is expected to contain few outside the ranks of those who havo given 'faithful civic and public service.' There will be many more representatives of educational, commercial, industrial, and public life than of 'society,' while all branches of 'the Services' and Government, it is believed, will be adequately represented, i "While tho Lord Mayor has been selecting his guests rumours have been rife at the Town Hall. Corridors are echoing with anticipation, but the most silent of all is the Lord Mayor. 'I desire the guests at the ball to be truly representative of every section of tho community. I hope my efforts to entertain his Royal Highness will befit the occasion."
