DUKE OF GLOUCESTER

VISIT TO NELSON

CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSION

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

NELSON, October 19.

At last evening's meeting of the Nelson City Council, the Mayor (Mr. W. J. Moffatt) reported on conferring with Mr. Malcolm Fraspr, Under-Sccre-tary for Internal Affairs, on arrangements for the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in January. To summarise the matter, said Mr. Moffatt, they would act according to orders, being allowed no initiative at all. The programme arranged in Nelson was that a civic reception would be held, the Mayor would road an address, and the Duko would give his reply. Then, it was suggested, the Duko should proceed to the Botanical Reserve, where the children would bo assembled to meet him.

The problem of bringing the country children in when their teachers were away on holiday had not yet been settled, went on Mr. Moffatt, the Education Board having left the matter in the Gala Committee's hands, aud written to the Government to see if the same privileges would be given the committee in the matter as the Education Board.

Councillor Russell said that in the event of the Government not entertaining the Gala Committee's offer, would the council do as had been done in Auckland, and set up a committee to take the same action as the Gala Committee would have taken? He moved in that direction. The motion was carried.

Councillor E. R. Neale referred to the fact that the Duke was going from Nelson to Greyrnouth, via Westport, in ono clay. He considered that with the stops on tho way this was far too strenuous. : .

Councillor Gibbs agreed, and lamented the fact that the Duke was not making a stay at Pelorus Bridge, which the Prince of Wales recently had placed fourth on his list of tho six most beautiful spots which ho had ever seen.
