THE AUSTRIAN PUTSCH
DAMAGE TO GERMANY
HITLER SEEKS REMEDIES
LONDON, October 12.
Herr Hitler is desperately anxious to repair tho damago to Italo-German relations caused by the Austrian putsch, says the Berlin correspondent of tho "Observer."
Tho Leader-Chancellor has given Herr yon Hassell, Germany's Ambassador to Italy instructions to mako overtures to Signor Mussolini, offering, it is believed, a ten-year pact by which Germany promises aloofness from Austrian politics.
Herr Hitler in .this way is offering to push German-Austrian unity into the background until it can be gained either by superior force or cunning diplomacy. He desires to win back Signor Mussolini as a champion of Germany's right to rearm, enabling Germany to enter tho European armaments race.
Herr Hitler's gesture also is part of Germany's unwavering anti-French policy.
