IMPROVING WEATHER

BUT COLD TEMPERATURES Special forecast for Wellington:—■ Moderate to fresh southerly winds •which will decrease tonight. Weather cold and cloudy with some light rain, but, conditions improving tonight. The depression responsible for the unsettled weather crossed the Dominion yesterday and passed away eastward last night, although a slight secondary developed in the south this morning. As an anticyclone is now advancing iii this direction from over. the Tasnian. Sea prospects for the weekend are fairly good. The general forecast issued at noon today is for. variable winds at first on the West Coast and. in the far south, but moderate to fresh southerlies to south-westerlies will prevail elsewhere. The weather will still be rather unsettled, with light rain at times inmost districts. A gradual improvement, however, may be expected. Temperatures will be cold and there will be inland frosts,tonight. A fairly general change to southerly weather has taken place over most of the Dominion and further rain has fallen in most districts, while many of the' South Island ranges have received a light coating of snow. The southerly wind has been strong only in a few places > being mostly only moderate in force. The change has been accompanied by the usual drop in temperature. Auckland's weather yesterday was cloudy, with showers in the morning. The wind backed during the afternoon from north to 'west and to south-west during the night, the weather this morning being fair. Wellington had rain early yesterday morning and a shower at 11.30 a.m. The weather in the afternoon improved and there was some' sunshine. A strong and squally north-westerly wind prevailed all day. After midnight this died down and at 4 a.m. there was a southerly change. Bain fell again later, 20 points being recorded at Kelburn up to 9 a.m. and 44 in Lower Hutt. It was still raining this morning at 9 o'clock, the wind being a moderate southerly. ' It was fine and warm in Christchurch .yesterday morning, the wind being a moderate northerly. , During the afternoon the wind backed to the aouth-west and' the weather became unsettled and showery, 11 points of rain being recorded. At 9 a.m. today it was cold and showery with a moderate south-westerly wind. . Dunedin's weather was dull and unsettled, rain falling in the afternoon and night with a moderate south-west-erly wind. Conditions this morning wero fair.
