AFTER ELLERSLIE

HORSES FOR TRENTHAM

(Special from "Early Bird.")

AUCKLAND, October 18.

Owners' and trainers' intentions with regard to the Wellington Meeting next weekend were disclosed at FJlerslie this afternoon, and there are indications that the afternoon express tomorrow for the south will be conveying about v dozen horses with engagements at Trentham. ' Sporting Blood and Grand Sport, both winners here today, mny be included in the string, although definite arrangements have yet to be made. However, it is expected thai they will fulfil their engagements' at the Wellington Meeting. ill-. R. T. Reid was undecided this afternoon whether Royal Artist and Mrs. Reid's horse Star Artist would make the trip to Trentham. Before the rain came yesterday it was considered that neither horse could give of its best under wet track conditions, and therefore the brilliant showing of the Wellington Handicap candidate Royal Artist in the handicap event this afternoon came as a pleasant surprise to the owner, who, by the way, did not see the race, being present as a member at .a meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board. Royal Artist paid a very large dividend. The Leigh ton gelding seems to be in first-class order now-, but his stablemate Star Artist failed to handle tho track in the sprint. A decision about the trip was expected to be arrived at tonight. W. Rayner is taking Spiral and Pomp to the Wellington Meeting tomorrow, but the two fillies Burnish and Canopy will be detached at Marton and sent back to Wanganui, the form of both not warranting the Trentham trip being undertaken. Spiral was not lucky in his two races here arid Pomp performed only fairly. The bigger track at Trentham may suit Spiral better. It is expected that F. Davis will get away tomorrow, afternoon for Trentham with Red Manfred and Pin Money, for both are under orders to fulfil their engagements this weekend. .The three-year-old made a very fair' showing in the sprint today without beingl favoured'in the running, and he may have a chance at Trentham on Saturday. Red Manfred again went another very fine race this afternoon, and if the Wellington Handicap waa to be run here he would be a pronounced favourite. The four-year-old is in capital order, and as he should have derived considerable benefit from his races he should strip in great order on Saturday. What is more, with a drop from 9st to S.S he is going to take a lot of beating at Trentham, while his form appears good enough to expect liim to go a fine race in the Harcourt Cup, a race he won last season.
