AUCKLAND'S "SLIPPERY SAM"
A new light is shed on the activities of the strange character who is believed to have been at the bottom of a number of burglaries in Auckland city and suburbs within recent months, and who has attained some degree of notoriety by tho sobriquet of "Slippery Sam" (states tho "Auckland Star"). Over the past weekend two flats were robbod of small sums by an unknown thief. On Sunday morning one tenant missed a 10s note from his trousers pocket, while his wife's purse had been ransacked aud somo change in silver stolen. Tho thief carefully omitted to take jewellory from tho dressing-table, and in doing so missed a sum of 10s deposited in plain view on the top. The following night premises were entered and a small sum of money was stolon in another part of the same district. Both thefts were committed in Mount Eden. What adds colour to the reports that tho thefts may bo laid to tho door of that mysterious "Slippery Sam" is the story of a milkman who mentioned that Uo had seen a woman walking along the road in which the first burglary occurred about 3.30 o'clock on Sunday morning. He thought nothing of this_ until the jwoman, apparently on seeing him, turned abruptly'and walked in the opposite direction; Even though this was unusual behaviour, he did not attach much significance to it until ho heard of the robberies.
