MAN FOR TRIAL
ASSAULT AND ROBBERY CHARGE

WANGANUI, October 16.
A charge was brought against William Garforth, aged 31, in tho Magistrate's Court today that he robbed a person of a. scarf and used personal violenco to achieve his ends. Tho accused pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Evidenco was given by Spencer Isted to tho effect that two men accosted him at 10 o'clock on the night of September 17 in tho Avenue, He gave each a cigarette and walked to Maria Place, both men keeping him company. One of them then caught him by the arms and the other went through his pockets and extractod 2s Cd. During tho struggle one of the men hit tho witness a blow on the side of the head. Witness struggled and got away. Tho shorter man made a grab at tho scarf and took it. Witness went back for a constable, but a search for the men through Cook's Gardens failed.
Detective N. W. Bayliss gave evidence as to the arrest of the accused in a hotel in Wellington.
