Tawa Plat Women's Institute. The Tawa Plat Women's Institute mot recently ut "Ye Okie Bull and Bush,", which looked very inviting with its cheery lires. Mrs. Turner presided. Two competitions were held. One was for the best knitted article from two skeins of wool, which wiia won by Mrs. "W. Hoolc. The other was for the best vase of flowers (six of ono vorioty), throe- members tieing for first place, Mrs. Turkiugton, Miss ISr. Woodman, and Mrs. Woods. Tin; motto for October is "Trying to give 1 others a good time is a sure way of enjoying yourself." A mime, "Sing a Song of Sixpence" was acted by I members of the Drama Circle, and was I well received. Mrs. MeKeown was the accompanist. Miss E. Fleming (Kclburn) demonstrated on "Thrift articles," and showed some very beautiful and useful specimens such as tea and egg cosies, etc, made from old felt hats, stockings, and scraps of blanket. A tall vase, which looked almost antique, was found to be covered with wallpaper, and was very artistic, as also were two trays made from old picture frames and dried flowers. She showed handsome embroideries made from linen aprons. Miss Fleming was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the interesting demonstration. Afternoon tea and social chat brought an enjoyable meeting to a close. A Delightful Evening. A pleasant little party was given by Miss Wynne Badger at the residence of Mrs. F. W. Gardiner, SussexStreet, in honour of Miss Gladys Swinney, whose marriage will take place shortly. Miss Badger, wearing black lace trimmed with georgette frills, received her guests assisted by the guest of honour, who wore a frock of blue lace. The evening was given over to modern and old-time dancing. A delicious supper was followed by the opening of parcels, and then further dancing and 'competitions brought procoediu"S to a close. ably responded, and Messrs. J. Steel and J. S. Collett then thanked Mr. and Mrs. Russell for the very pleasant evening. The bridge prizes were won by Mrs. W. 11. Chittey and Mr. G. Blade, while the euchre trophies were won by Mr. and Mrs. J. Steel respectively. Ngaio Card Evenings. The final of a series of card evenings, which have been running for the past three months, in aid of Mr. J. B. Lea (one of the candidates in the "Popular Man Contest"), was held last week, when the aggregato prizes were presented. The bridge prizes wore won by Mrs. Woods and Mr. E. Wilson, while Mrs. Adams and Mr. O. Giddall carried off the' "500" prizes. "A Gift Evening." A very pleasant evening was spent recently when Mrs. Aitchison, J.P., and Miss Aitchison, of Pctone, entertained a number of their friends at a "gift evening" in honour of the approaching marriage of Miss Parata. Games, competitions, and musical items were indulged in. The following rendered musical items: —Mesdamos Shakespear, Smith, L. Aitehison, Te Puni, Messrs. Parata, Shcrson, and Hobbs. Also present were Mesdamcs Robertshaw, Porter, Evans, Buck, Walsh, Cloutt; and Misses V. and J. Burns, Evans, Daly, Bird, Dickens, Scott, Wright, and Ryder.
