PLEASANT FUNCTION
WELCOME TO MR. J. PAYNE
Mr. James Payne, Assistant Australian Trade Commissioner and Mrs. Payne, who arrived in Wellington by the Monowai on Monday, were the guests of honour at a particularly pleasant party, given by Mr. R. H. Nesbitt, Australian Trade Commissioner, in the palm lounge of the Hotel St. George, yesterday afternoon.
Tho lounge looked very attractive, with massed rhododendrons, azaleas, and tulips, in all shades of red, standing out against tho cool green of tho palms. Australian guests particularly noted the two largo baskets of waratah bloom, brought from Sydney, and placed in tho centre of tho room. The informally arranged tea tables, where a delicious afternoon tea was served, helped to make the occasion a particularly friendly and sociable one. The/ many guests were received by Mr. R. H. Nesbitt, Colonel and Mrs. G. H. Forbes (the latter wearing a black costume, with a Breton sailor hat of black straw and fox furs), Dr. and Mrs. R. Bakewell (the latter wearing a black and white ensemble), and Mr. F. W. Mothes. They were introduced on,arrival to Mr. and Mrs. Payne and their little daughter. Mrs. Payne wore a charming costumo of turquoise blue wool crepe, with a halo hat of the same shade, and furs. Miss Margaret Payne was dressed in a pretty frock of powder blue silk, with ,t butterfly bow in her hair.
