V.M.C.A. INDOOR CONTESTS
Seven associations of the V.M.C.A. took part in the sixth annual all-round indoor athletic competition for boys, held during August and September, under the auspices of the National Council. The shield and the cup were won by Duuedin, with 14 points, Falmerston North with 13 points gaining second place. The main object is to 'encourage a large number of boys to take part in all-round athletics and to raise the general average of ability amongst the large majority of the membership. Of the total of 10G7 members of the seven associations, 720 boys competed. Fractions of an inch and split seconds separated contestants and decided the final averages this year, which was the first time the shield has gone to the South Island. Palmerston North, the run-ners-lip this year, won the shield in 1929 and have held it on three different occasions. Hamilton won it in 1930 and 1931. The largest number of competitors came from the Christchurch association, 210 taking part. Dunedin's percentage of members taking part was the highest—9G per cent. The contest is so arranged that the smaller and the larger associations compete on a fairly equal footing, averages being taken according to membership numbers. The Hutt Valley association entered 91 boys, although the work there had been in operation only six weeks. The events, with the best performances given in parentheses, were as follows:—Running high jump (4ft 4 4-9 in, .Palmerston); standing long jump (7ft 2 7-Sin, Palmerston); standing hop, step, mid jump (20ft 8 5-oin, Dunedin); 00 yards potato race (In 7-30 sec, Palmerston); bar snap (Oft fi 2-9 in, Dunedin); fence vault (oft 4in, Hamilton).
