S.A. VETERANS

DOMINION EXECUTIVE

A well-attended meeting of the Dominion executive committee of the South African War Veterans' Association of New Zealand was held recently, Mr. J. I. Goldsmith presiding. The chairman welcomed the newlyelected members, Messrs. T. G. Millighan and A. G. Johnston. A large amount of routine business was transacted and the ever-pressing need of funds to help those who were in ill health and in distress was regarded as more urgent than ever. It was decided to proceed with the publication of "The Veteran" without delay, and Mr. I). Wilson was appointed editor. The wish was expressed that all South African associations throughout trie Do-! minion would endeavour to participate in the welcome to H.K.ir. the Duke of Gloucester in December. Kegret was expresed at the recent illness of the association's patron, General Sir Alfred Kobin, and it was hoped that his recovery would bo of a permanent nature. The official publication of the history of the contingents in the Boer War, written by the late Captain J. A. Shancl, was discussed. All matter is now in the Government's Printer's hands, and a number of copies have already been ordered, but, unfortunately, not sufficient to warrant proceeding with the' work. All libraries and secondary schools throughout the Dominion are to be appealed to and it is confidently expected they will respond, because it is the only official record of this nature, and I should find a place on their shelves.

Great gratification was expressed at the fact that Viscount Gsihvay, D.5.0., 0.8.8., who is a South African veteran, is to be the new Governor-General of New Zealand. All present stood in silence out of respect tr> the memory of the late Mr. A. 0. Leach, who was a South African veteran and a member of the Wellington Association.
