NIGHTLY'S SUCCESS
A WELL-DESERVED WIN
(Prom "Vedette.") SYDNEY, October 9. Nightly scored a popular win in the £1000 Randwick Plate on the final day at Randwick. It was some consolation for his bad luck in the Metropolitan. Contrary to the usual run of these two-mile weight-for-age races, it was a real contest, with the pace on from the beginning, due to the ex-A.R.C. mare First Balloon. *'* Nightly and Oro followed closely on First Balloon for a mile and a quarter, and then Oro went after First Balloon, taking a run on the rails, while Nightly had to go on the outside. Nightly, however, kept up with Oro, and had him covered to the turn. From that point the race was all Nightly's, and he won rather decisively. Unfortunately he pulled up again rather lame in front, but this is not so uncommon with him that little notice was taken of it. M. McCarten took the ride again, but R. Reed held the Nightly people to their contract, and claimed the winning ride. The stewards decided in his favour, so Reed sat on the stand and saw McCarten earn £38 15s, the winning percentage, for him.
McCarten incidentally was the leading rider at the meeting with five winners, and earning £276 in percentages.
