LAWN TENNIS

WELLESLEY CLUB

The newly-formed Wellesley Lawn Teunis Club held its first opening clay on. Saturday afternoon, the function proving highly successful. There were about eighty members and visitors present on the courts, and the season was declared open by Mr. W. J. Melody, a _ member of the management committee of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association and known throughout the Dominion for his work in encouraging young players to develop their game. Mr. Melody, who was introduced by Mr. S. V. Fernandez, complimented tho club on the excellent state of the new courts and- wished members a successful season. Members were also addressed by Mr. J. MeDuff, representing the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association, who explained the nature of interclub competitions and tournaments conducted by tho Wellington Association. The standard of play revealed during the afternoon was extremely creditable and showed that the club's teams (of which two have been entered in the interclub contests) should make an excellent showing in the third and fourth grades. During the afternoon thirtyeight players entered their names on the list provided for those willing to take part in interclub games. Afternoon tea was served in the assembly room of the college. Officers of tho club have not yet been elected, but a general meeting will be held at an early date.
