EASTBOURNE CLUB

There was a good attendance of members and visitors at the- Eastbourne Bowling Club's opening on Saturday. Mr. D. N. Isaacs, vice-president, extended a hearty welcome to those present. The green was considered to be one of the beauty spots of the Wellington district. Ho congratulated, the greenkeeper in handing over the green in such excellent condition. He extended the club 's'sympathy to an old member, Mr. T. J. Thompson, in his bereavement, and to the Hon. G. J. Anderson and Mr. H. Douglas, who had been ill recently. The Hon. W. Perry, M.L.C., said that when he retired from the presidency of the Wellington Centre in Juno last ho thought he was absolved for ever from opening bowling greens, but he was pleased to be present. As long a|o as the 13th century bowling flourished in England, but in 1295, when Parliament was constituted for the first time on its present basis, an ordinance was passed against it, describing it as "a lazy, dishonest, and useless game." However, it continued to flourish. . Mrs. J. Golding, wife of. the president, threw up the kitty .and Mr. H. E. Gil-' bert, the oldest member, the first bowl. Mr. Perry thereupon declared tho season open. ' - A photograph of the original Eastbourne bowling green was presented to the club by the son of the founder, Mr. H. W. Shorjjt. __^________
