BRITISH GUIANA
TERRITORY DESCRIBED
13,000 SQUARE MILES
(British Official Wireless.) (Received September 29, 1 p.m.)
RUGBY, September 28. The text was issued this morning of a letter from the Foreign Secretary, (Sir John Simon) regarding the sug-i gestod settlement of Assyrians in tha Rupunini district, British Guiaua, which: formed an appendix to the report submitted to the League Council by thej President of tho Assyrian Committee* The letter says that the area, which! is the only one both available and apparently suitable in the British colonial Empire, should be sufficiently large to! accommodate all Assyrians who may; desire to leave Irak, and appears to> have possibilities of further development as a stock-raising area. Its agricultural potentialities have not yet been properly tested, but it is thought that limited areas would lend themselves to cultivation sufficiently to meet the' requirements of the Assyrian settlers and of their stock. A much closer examination will, however, be necessary with particular, regard to. health and climate and pastoral and agricultural conditions before the district can definitely be pronounced suitable, and an independent investigation on the spot under League auspices appears essential both for the satisfac* tion of the Leaguo Council and of the Assyrians before a decision is reached. This investigation, in the opinion of the British Guiana Government, should last three months.
The district has an area of 13,009 square .miles, and belongs to the Gov» eminent of British Guiana, although parts are leased to private interests. The largest of these holds 1500 square miles of grazing land, and the Government of British Guiana has secured an option under which, if tho League proceeds with the scheme, the entire leases of the company concerned, including "cattle, horses, and buildings, could be.purchased for. 168,000 dollars at any date prior to March 20 next. The letter.makes clear that tho possibilities of settlement in British Guiana are brought to the League Committee's notice without prejudice to the question of the provision of the necessary finance which can only bo effectively considered when further investigation has proved the schema feasible.
